Crop Sensors vs Full Frame :: Crop Or Crap?

Let's get a few things out of the way ::

I have said, in the past, that you should move toward full frame sensors. I have always championed full frame sensors. At the end of the day, full frame sensors beat APS sized and smaller sensors.

The whole reason I bought an original x100 was because it had the largest sensor I could find in a small camera. It had been a number of years since I had shot an APS crop frame sensor. The last APS camera I shot professionally was the Nikon D200. I replaced that with a Nikon D3 (full frame) and then moved on to the Canon 5d2, (also full frame.) From the time I retired my D200 to using the x100 on jobs was about four years. When I bought that little x100 I had ZERO desire to change to a new camera system. I sure as hell was NOT going to switch from a full frame camera to an APS camera. Full frame cameras are better. Right?

If I have ruffled your feathers, as these topics usually tend to do, please read my entire blog post about this topic before you fire something off at me. I go more in depth there.

'Reely and Truly' - a short film on photography (Director's Cut)

‘Reely and Truly’ is a new documentary from director Tyrone Lebon. The 30-minute film is an visual poem on contemporary photographers and their practices.

Lebon’s intention is for the film to be a photographic object in itself. It is shot on all available celluloid formats (including 65mm, 35mm, super 16mm, 16mm, and super 8mm). The film has a free structure with an unconventional narrative, taking on the form of a visual poem.

This film is part of the ongoing ‘Reely and Truly’ project which will culminate in a book of photographs, texts and films about the practice of over 30 contemporary photographers to be published by DoBeDo in 2015. This 30 minute film is an extended trailer for that project.

Featuring (in order of appearance): Mark Lebon, Dick Jewell, Juergen Teller, Jack Webb, Sean Vegezzi, Jason Evans, Nigel Shafran, Fumiko Imano, Charchakaj Waikawee, Lina Scheynius, Nobuyoshi Araki, Takashi Homma, Ari Marcopoulos, Jill Freedman, Nick Sethi, Asger Carlsen, Arne Svenson, Petra Collins, Tim Barber, Renee Cox, Mario Sorrenti, and Lele Saveri.

The book is availaible for pre-order at DoBeDo.Co.uk

The story behind the wallpaper we'll never forget

From today on Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP. The one thing everybody will always remember of Windows XP is desktop image 'Bliss', with it's green rolling hills and bluer than blue sky. Doesn't the most viewed picture of all times asks for a worthy goodbye? We certainly think so! That's why we hopped on a plane to Los Angeles and went to visit the photographer Charles O'Rear.

He told us the incredible story behind the famous desktop image of Windows XP.

SMAPP Tutorial - Basic Interview Lighting

we are one week closer to the launch of SMAPP and as our update of the week we wanted to share a tutorial on interview lighting.

there are so many different ways you can light an interview and while story is always important, interviews more than anything else often come with the constraints of time, space, and gear. traveling for A Game of Honor we had to be able to light an interview with whatever we could fit into one 70lb suitcase (which inspired a whole separate tutorial on what's in that suitcase). if you've done your share of interviews, you'll be all too familiar with showing up and having a room that would be a tight fit just to hold all of your gear, let alone setup and interview in it. with almost every interview we feel like we could use one more stinger, one more light, an extra five minutes to tweak the setup, or an extra 5' feet to reposition the talent and camera. however, through working within these constraints we can learn to do much more with much less. half the tricks we know about lighting have all come from having to figure something out while on set, and having to do so quickly. the more we understand light, how it works and how we can work with it, the more we can make the most of whatever time, gear, and space we might find ourselves in.

we hope you enjoy our first lighting tutorial on basic interview lighting. our next lighting tutorial we will be sharing shortly will show how we light the same scene three different ways to create different moods.

Leica Lenses (English)

Every Leica lens is hand-crafted and goes through meticulous manufacturing processes to uphold the quality and precision that Leica defines and customers have come to expect. In the age where technology almost inevitably means mass manufacturing, Leica products are still made with exacting precision by the hands of highly-trained technicians.

This video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship and making of Leica lenses in the production facilities of Leica Camera AG.

Making Of The Chapel

Hello.

If you are not in the business, or even if you are, you might not be aware of the amount of work behind TheChapel.

Although we did not shoot the real "making of" shots almost at all, we decided to tell a bit more about making of this film. Illustrated with some photos, shots and post-production screenflows we hope to put some more light on the process of making of The Chapel and give you an overview of what and how we did.

Please leave comments.
Please share it - we would love that the film be watched widely. Although it was posted a few months ago it passed a bit unnoticed. Well, a film needs a bit of luck to be watched.

This is a personal project for my wife and kids.

A layer-by-layer deconstruction of "Flowing Meditation," part of REBIRTH of GAEA, an epic visual tapestry delicately interweaving reflections on the environment and spirituality through the rich imagery of Greek Mythology.

My daughter Emma has had a deep connection to the environment for as long as I can remember. As she grew older and became enchanted with Greek Mythology, I decided to show my support for her interests by creating REBIRTH of GAEA, depicting her as the Goddess of Earth.

This piece debuts at ART EXPO New York on March 22, 2012.

The song is "You're Too Late Satan" by Worm Is Green, an amazing Icelandic group mixing sparse electronic beats and glossy trip-hop threads. If you like the song, you can play it or purchase it here: last.fm/music/Worm+Is+Green/_/You're+Too+Late+Satan
